The major goals of this research are to identify and characterize factors that influence the detrimental interactions between plants and pest organisms. The specific aims are to elucidate the effect of controlling these factors in order to provide the plant with a competitive advantage when dealing with such organisms. The factors we are studying include natural plant defense compounds, genes derived from the pathogen or pest, and genes from sources unrelated to the interaction.
